Hair loss is a signal, not a verdict

Pattern hair loss runs on hormones: DHT gradually shrinks the follicle until it stops producing a visible hair. Finasteride lowers DHT at the scalp; minoxidil extends the growth phase and improves blood flow to the follicle.

Applied topically, the actives concentrate where they are needed. Consistency, not dose, is what decides the result.

  • Shedding settles

Some people notice extra shedding in the first weeks as weak hairs make way for new growth. It is expected and it passes.

  • Loss slows first

Holding on to the hair you have comes before regrowth: in the finasteride trials, most men stopped losing ground within the first year.

  • Regrowth takes months

New hairs are fine at first and thicken over time. Give any regimen six months before judging it, and keep going to keep the gains.

Individual results vary. Expectations above reflect the published trials of finasteride and minoxidil in pattern hair loss; compounded topical formulas are not the FDA-approved brand-name products and were not studied in those trials.

What to expect, month by month

  1. Week 1

One application to a dry scalp each day. Your physician sets the strength; the routine takes about a minute.

  2. Weeks 2–8

A temporary uptick in shedding can happen as follicles reset their growth cycle. It is a known sign the actives are working.

  3. 3 Months

Shedding normalizes and loss slows. Fine new hairs may appear at the crown and hairline. Your physician checks in.

  4. 6 Months

This is when the trials measured a visible difference in hair count. Density and coverage keep improving with continued use.

  5. 1 Year and Beyond

Gains hold as long as you keep using the treatment; stopping returns the follicle to its previous course within months.

Why topical, and why both actives together

Oral finasteride works, but it acts on the whole body. A topical formula keeps the active at the scalp, where DHT does its damage, with far less reaching the bloodstream.

Minoxidil covers the other half of the problem: it keeps follicles in their growth phase longer. Studies of the two together show more regrowth than either alone.
