Tiredness, weight changes and feeling cold have many causes. Physician-led care confirms hypothyroidism with a blood test, starts with the standard medicine, and rechecks your dose.
Hypothyroidism is treated with levothyroxine as the standard of care, and it is confirmed with a blood test.¹ Tiredness and low mood also have other causes. In adults aged 65 and older with subclinical hypothyroidism, a year of levothyroxine did not improve symptoms compared with placebo.²
Our in-house team of U.S.-licensed physicians and nurse practitioners checks your TSH, treats what your labs confirm, and rechecks your dose as you go.
On levothyroxine, the hypothyroid symptom score did not differ from placebo after one year (between-group difference 0.0 points, 95% CI -2.0 to 2.1) in 737 adults aged 65 and older with subclinical hypothyroidism.
Stott DJ et al., N Engl J Med, 2017of 70 adults with hypothyroidism preferred desiccated thyroid after 16 weeks on each product; 18.6% preferred levothyroxine and 32.9% had no preference. Symptom and neurocognitive measures did not differ between the two.
Hoang TD et al., J Clin Endocrinol Metab, 2013on levothyroxine alone, levothyroxine plus liothyronine, or desiccated thyroid, in 75 adults: TSH stayed in range in all three arms, and primary and secondary outcomes did not differ, except a small rise in heart rate on desiccated thyroid.
Shakir MKM et al., J Clin Endocrinol Metab, 2021In the 2014 ATA guideline review, no alternative preparation was shown to be consistently better than levothyroxine alone for health outcomes. Jonklaas J et al., Thyroid, 2014
Trial results are averages for specific products, doses and groups, and they are not predictions for you. The desiccated thyroid and T3 studies were small crossover trials, and patient preference was one of their outcomes. The TRUST result applies to adults aged 65 and older with subclinical hypothyroidism, not to people already diagnosed and treated. Compounded products are not FDA-approved, and these trials did not test them.
When you have symptoms that could come from your thyroid, you should not have to guess. Our care team checks your TSH and your history, starts with the standard medicine, and adjusts the dose when your labs say so.
We test first, we start with levothyroxine as the standard, and we recheck TSH after every dose change, so you know what changed and why, with plans starting at $79 a month.
Start hereThyroid care has clear guidelines, and it also attracts a lot of marketing for alternatives. We read the trials, state their limits, and keep the treatments the evidence supports.

No. Thyroid hormone is not a weight-loss treatment, and we do not prescribe it for that purpose. In the desiccated thyroid trial, participants lost about 3 lb, a small change that is not a reason to take it.
No. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and desiccated thyroid products are not FDA-approved either. The trials we cite tested specific products and doses, not every product we sell.
About six to eight weeks after any dose change, because levothyroxine takes weeks to settle in the blood. Your physician reviews the result before changing the dose again.
Not on the number alone. In the TRUST trial of adults 65 and older with subclinical hypothyroidism, levothyroxine did not improve symptoms over one year, so we weigh the result together with your history.
We discuss it with you. Some symptomatic patients preferred T3 or desiccated thyroid in trials, but overall outcomes were similar, so we start with levothyroxine and decide any change with labs and symptoms.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and the FDA has not reviewed them for safety, efficacy, or quality. Prescription products require an online evaluation with a licensed medical professional who will determine if a prescription is appropriate. Trial results describe groups, not individual outcomes. Individual results vary.
