Important safety information and common side effects
Sermorelin is generally well tolerated. With troches, common, mild effects include a tingling or altered taste while it dissolves, headache, flushing, dizziness or sleepiness that pass in hours. Stop and seek care for hives, swelling of the face or lips or trouble breathing. Sermorelin is not for people with an active cancer, and your physician needs to know about diabetes, thyroid disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every medication you take, including steroids and thyroid hormone.
The research behind
sermorelin.
A GHRH analogue made of the first 29 amino acids of the natural hormone. FDA approved it in 1997 for children with growth failure from idiopathic growth hormone deficiency; the maker discontinued it in 2008. Adult evidence is limited to small trials of hormone levels.

FDA approved GEREF (sermorelin acetate) vials on September 26, 1997, for treating idiopathic growth hormone deficiency in children with growth failure. The maker, EMD Serono, discontinued it in 2008. In 2013 FDA determined it was not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness.

Walker's 2006 paper is an editorial proposing sermorelin as an alternative to recombinant growth hormone in aging. It presents no trial data of its own, and says the society would supply sermorelin to practitioners to study under protocol.

Corpas (1992, 10 older men), Vittone (1997, 11 men) and Khorram (1997, 19 men and women, using a close analogue) measured growth hormone and IGF-I over 2 to 16 weeks of treatment. None measured a clinical outcome.

What the studies found
- Raised overnight growth hormone release in healthy men aged 64 to 76 after 6 weeks of nightly injections (Vittone, Metabolism 1997; 11 men)
- Raised IGF-I in older men at the higher dose, given twice daily for 14 days (Corpas, J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1992; 10 men)
- Improved 2 of 6 strength tests and abdominal endurance in older men (Vittone, Metabolism 1997; 11 men)
- In men, increased insulin sensitivity and improved self-rated well-being and libido after 16 weeks of a close analogue (Khorram, J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1997; 9 men)
- Increased height velocity in children with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency, the one use FDA approved (1999 review of pediatric trials; FDA 2013 notice)
No approved sermorelin product is marketed: the FDA-approved GEREF is on the discontinued list. Sermorelin used today is compounded, and adult use is off-label. The injection and the sublingual troche are different products. No human trial of the troche was found.
What this does not say
- The adult trials lasted 2 to 16 weeks, and no long-term outcome trial in adults was found.
- Growth hormone-releasing drugs raise IGF-I, and the effects of sustained elevation are not established.
- Compounded product quality and dose accuracy are not verified. No human study of the sublingual troche was found.
