What is the oxytocin nasal spray?

(ox-ee-TOE-sin; 20 units per spray)

Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid hormone made in the hypothalamus and released during touch, sex, orgasm and bonding with a partner or a child. Taken as a nasal spray it reaches the brain quickly, which is why it has been studied for arousal, orgasm intensity and the feeling of closeness during sex. The 20-unit strength is the usual starting dose, used as needed rather than daily.

Human studies of intranasal oxytocin for sexual response are small and mixed: some show more intense orgasm and closeness, a long-term randomized trial found no difference from placebo. Prescribed off-label at your physician's discretion.

How the oxytocin spray works

  1. Day 1

A US-licensed physician reviews your goals, history and medications and chooses the strength. The spray ships discreetly to your door.

  2. First use

One spray in a nostril about 30 minutes before intimacy. Effects are felt within the hour and fade within a few hours; there is nothing to take daily.

  3. First weeks

Most people learn quickly whether it adds closeness or orgasm intensity for them. Your physician checks in on what you noticed.

  4. Month 2–3

If the effect is modest, your physician may move you to the 30-unit strength; if there is no effect, it is honest to stop.

  5. Beyond

Used as needed for as long as it helps. Connection, sleep, stress and relationship factors matter more than any spray, and your physician says so.

What the research says

The science of intranasal oxytocin

In a couples study, intranasal oxytocin increased orgasm intensity and post-sex contentment in both partners; in men it raised arousal and orgasm measures in a laboratory setting.

A long-term randomized trial in women with sexual dysfunction found oxytocin and placebo improved symptoms equally. Your physician tells you that plainly and decides with you whether it is worth trying.
